9 Skincare Tips For Your Daughter

My mother was never big on makeup or skincare. Her skin care regimen consisted of cleansing her face with Dove soap and applying a thin layer of Vaseline, and she always had a soft, radiant completion and perfectly creamy skin tone. Although she owned plenty of makeup, her makeup routine consisted of lip balm. That's it.

Because of the simplicity of my mother's skincare and makeup routine, we never spoke much about good skincare or makeup. Anything I learned about either of these things, I did by doing my own research and doing lots of reading.

Now that I have a daughter, I have made it a point to talk to her about skincare and yes, makeup. Although she just turned ten this past week, I think it's never too early to teach her a good skincare and makeup regimen.

I have put together this list of the 9 most important tips that, in my opinion, every mother should teach their daughter(s) about skin care;

1. Have a bedtime routine.
"Wash your face with face wash and moisturize every night before bed. It's important to remove all the dirt and oil that collects on your face throughout the day."

Julissa was only 7, when we started a bedtime routine. I searched everywhere for a good product for young girls, that wasn't full of chemicals. I was starting to loose hope when I came upon this set. I can't say enough good things about this product. In Julissa's words; "I love the tingly sensation I get after washing my face!" ... she just loves it! And I love that it is made with all natural ingredients. Don't let the size fool you—I bought the travel size kit and a little goes a long way. Ours lasted almost three months using it twice a day!

My daughter washes and moisturizes her face in the mornings as well, but if I had to choose between morning and night, I say that the night routine is the most important.

2. Use moisturizer.
"Moisturize your face to keep a healthy moisture balance on your skin."

It's important for her to learn the benefits of regular moisturizing. Moisturizing regularly keeps her skin from getting dry and scaly. It also helps keeping her skin soft and glowy and her completion looking healthy. This is especially important if you live in a cold climate for part or most of the year.

4. Use lip balm.
"Lip-gloss looks pretty and shinny, but you also need a good lip balm to keep your lips from looking dry and scaly."

Just like your face and body, a good lip balm will keep her lips moist, soft and healthy looking. Lip gloss will not look as good if their lips are dry or cracked.

5. Use sunblock.
"Protect your skin, but especially your face, from the harmful rays of the sun."

Sunblock is important to protect your skin  against skin cancer and sun damage. Even a moisturizer with sunblock in it, is better than no sunblock at all.

3. Use organic or homemade products, when possible.
"Whenever possible, make your own beauty products, or buy organic." Homemade sugar scrubs are so much better than store bought ones!

They are made with items that you probably already have in your kitchen, are organic, easy to make and cheap. Same goes for face masks.

6. Quality versus quantity.
We learned this one the hard way; my daughter was in a school play, where they used cheap, dollar store makeup on the girls. At the end of the play I noticed that her eyes were almost shut closed and her face was extremely red. She had gotten a reaction to the cheap makeup that was applied to her eyes and face. Makeup that is cheaply made also requires more of it to make it look descent, due to lack of pigmentation. It is best to own few good quality products that will last a long time, than many cheap products. Like my mother used to say...'cheap is expensive in the long run'.

7. Less is More
"When it comes to makeup less is always more. Accentuate your attributes without going overboard. The natural beauty of a woman is always best."

I can attest to this, especially when girls are young and inexperienced with makeup. My Mother didn't allow me to wear makeup, even though I was 13, about to start high school and most of my friends were allowed to wear makeup. So I would do what some teenagers would do—do it behind her back. But because I knew nothing about makeup, I would use the reddest lipstick and the blackest eye shadow possible *oh boy*...until my mother caught me, took a picture of me and showed me that I looked like a bad clown painting gone wrong lol! She let me wear makeup after that and I took it down a notch...or two! Sometimes a little mascara and lip-gloss makes a big statement.

8. Go natural.
"Let your face breathe and your natural beauty shine through."

I love playing with makeup and doing different looks (hello, smokey eye!), and Julissa seems to have the same love for it. Although, she's not allowed to wear it outside the house yet. But it's also good to teach our daughters to let their faces breathe and spend a makeup free day.

9. You only get one face. Take good care of it.
Yes.

After getting her birthday money, Julissa asked to go shopping for lip-gloss and earrings—she's such a girl :)!—and while at the store, she chose a glossy, glittery lip-gloss..."because it's a good brand, not too dark, and it's pretty", she said.

I guess she's been listening to me all along.

Sunday Shenanigans

I'm not a morning person, so I like to sleep in on weekends, but the boys had an early game this morning so I woke up unusually early to make breakfast and get everyone to the field on time—for a change.

Because the boys and Julissa had games back to back we were planning on spending the entire morning and some of the afternoon in the field, so I made everyone a filling breakfast of cheese omelets, veggie sausage links, home fries and pancitos (croissants). We were out the door by 8 am. Because we were rushing I suggested to my husband that we get coffee at DD's. He didn't object one bit...he just loves his DD's :).

I left the house in my workout clothes with the intentions to go for a run while the boys warmed up for their game <---- *this idea in my head that I always seem to have but I never follow through with*. Anyways, after getting that coffee all I wanted was to sit and enjoy it. In fact, while I was getting the coffees, I saw this new squared-cheesecake-donut thing that looked soooo good and appetizing and I wanted one. The only thing that stopped me was the calories listed next to it—364. Heck no, I thought, I would have to walk three plus miles to shed those calories. I grabbed my coffees and  ran out of the place before I changed my mind lol.

Since we I have vowed to stay away from the snack shack at the field, by the time Julissa's game was over at one o'clock, I was starving! It's definitely time to put the cooler in the car, filled with water, fruits and healthy snacks.

Talking about Julissa's game...the coach had her play catcher today and she did great out there!

I got home, cooked for my starving family, ate and then sat for what felt like forever contemplating...*cough cough*...procrastinating going for a run. Why is it so hard to get back in shape and keep up with it?

Anyways,I finally stopped procrastinating and went for a walk/run. I actually ran the most I have ever run and went the longest I've ever gone. Here I go you 5K! ... But I was dead by the time I was done.

My brother, Kevin, always cheering me on...

Thankfully I turned down that pastry at DD's because I walked my buns off and only burned 382 calories, which would have been the calories of that monster lol!

And just for a good laugh; while on my walk, one of those flying ant-looking bugs flew right inside my sports bra and started stinging me. I turned into a mad woman trying to fish it out without removing my bra and shirt. In the process I managed to drop my phone, which now has a huge crack on the top of the screen *wahhh* :(. But I'm sure that those that saw me making this crazy dance on the sidewalk of a busy street got a chuckle of me lol.

Oh well, I'm due for an upgrade anyways! :P

Well, that's how my Sunday went. Never a dull moment in my house ;). Hope everyone had a good Sunday as well.

Here's to a brand new week....

My Softball Girl

Julissa joined the softball team this year and she loves it!

Last year she had joined a cheer team and, although she really enjoyed cheer, I found it to be very time consuming, draining and not to mention - expensive.   At first she was really unmotivated and disappointed at the fact that I had signed her up for softball. She really, really wanted to go back to cheer and made sure to let me know about it almost on a daily basis, and she wouldn't fail to add that she didn't think she would be good at softball. I was starting to feel like I had made a mistake and she would hate softball and that this was more about me than her. But I have always been one to encourage my kiddos to try new things, especially in sports, so I asked her to keep an open mind and give it a good try before deciding that it wasn't for her. She reluctantly agreed.

So off we went the day before her first practice to buy all the softball equipment she needed; glove, cleats, socks, pants, etc., with the hopes that maybe this would get her a little more excited about playing. It did! ... check! When we got home the first thing she did was to put on her cleats. A couple of hours later, she still had them on and refused to take them off inside the house. This, without a doubt, caused some scratches on my beautiful wood floors...but who cares?...she was EXCITED! <--- check!

Cleats, cleats and more cleats! My car is an extension of this.

On her first day of practice she hit a ball on her very first try (ha—I guess that having three baseball-playing-older brothers has paid off!) and a few others after that. She also really liked her coach and the girls on her team. On the ride home she blurted out that <she> "loved softball practice and couldn't wait for her first real game!"....check check check

Pink for days...

There goes the ball!!

The next day was the team's first game and Julissa played amazingly. She hit several balls - again - and made a couple of runs. At the end of the game she was given her very first ball! She was so excited *YOU GO, JULISSA*I put the date on the ball and had her sign her name so that we can put it in a keepsakes box to display in her bedroom (wish I would have thought of this for the boys' first baseball *sigh*).

First ball!

Did I mention how tall and beautiful Julissa looked out on the field? No? Well she looked beautiful. Ugh...she's growing up so fast! Seeing my daughter, my baby, out in the field enjoying herself made me so happy. I'm so proud of her for stepping out of her comfort zone and trying something new and different. I'm also glad I pushed her to try something different. Now she's realized that she can do things she thought she couldn't do. That it is okay to try new things but that it's also okay to be afraid to make changes.

From this day on and until the end of baseball/softball season, my time will officially consist as follows: 50% work, 48% field time and 2% free time, so if any one needs me, I will be out there, somewhere in field one, two or three, cheering my kiddos on. You're welcome to come around and cheer with me ;).

You know you're a baseball Mom when you open your purse and you find this...

It's a good life.
